Shed Floors: The Part That Makes the Shed
Do sheds come with a floor? Most do not, including ours. Steel sheds across the industry are supplied without a floor and the base is left to the buyer. SteelChief is different in what happens next: we supply the floor options and the team to build them, as one job.
Most people choose a shed by size, colour and roof. Very few think about the floor. Yet the floor is what decides whether your shed lasts for years or starts to fail. A shed without a proper floor is really just a roof and four walls sitting on bare ground, ready to rust, flood or shift.
Here is the part the industry tends to skip: most sheds do not come with a floor. Flat-pack and steel sheds are almost always sold without one, and the base is left for you to sort out yourself, usually after you have already bought.
That is where SteelChief is different. We have the floor options, and the team to build them.
The floor makes the shed
The floor is not an optional extra. It keeps moisture out, gives you a level and stable surface, anchors the shed against wind and theft, and protects both the structure and everything you store inside. Rust starts from the bottom up, so a shed that sits on damp, unprepared ground is the most common cause of early failure.
Get the floor right and everything above it lasts. Get it wrong and nothing else matters.
Your floor options
Concrete slab. The strongest and longest-lasting base, and the usual choice for most steel sheds. Mandatory for any shed that needs a building permit, with no alternatives, and required for roller-door sheds. It is also the only base that carries our N3 wind rating. We prepare the site and pour the slab.

Timber floor. Warm, dry, and comfortable underfoot, timber floors are included as standard on our timber shed range and available for steel sheds within building permit size. These floors can be installed on any flat ground that has been prepared and levelled.

Uneven ground? Raised timber sub-floor. The smart choice for sloping or uneven blocks. Gives a dead-level, stable platform and lifts the shed clear of ground moisture, without expensive fill. Available on non-permit sheds only.

Crushed rock. The foundation under your floor. Levels the site and helps drain water away from the base.
Pavers, sleepers or star pickets. Simple anchoring for small, wind-protected, non-permit sheds. These options are not N3 rated. If your site is exposed or your shed needs a permit, it needs a slab.

Steel or timber, we sort the floor
Like the rest of the industry, our steel sheds (most of what we build) do not arrive with a floor in the box. The difference is what happens next. Instead of leaving you to source ply, find a concreter and level the ground yourself, we handle it as one job: site prep, crushed rock, concreting, sub-floors and install, all from one local Australian team. Our timber sheds go a step further and include a timber floor as standard.
Our steel sheds anchor to the slab through BaseSmart, our L-shaped base flashing. Unlike the U-shaped channel most manufacturers use, it lets water and debris fall away instead of trapping them against the steel, which is the leading cause of rust at the base of a shed. Fitted as standard on vertical clad steel sheds.
Don’t buy a shed until you have sorted the floor
The floor is the one part that turns a shed into a real, lasting solution, and it is the one part most suppliers leave you to figure out alone. We won’t.
