Pickup, Delivery & Timings
Every shed is manufactured in Ballarat and delivered or picked up from our service network. The questions below cover pickup, delivery coverage, delivery pricing, lead times, and how to handle and store the pre-assembled panels.
Can I pick up the shed myself?
Yes - pickup is available from most of our network. You can pick up directly from one of our company-owned offices or any of our distributor locations. It is a common option for customers in regional areas, customers with their own transport, or customers who want to save on delivery cost.
If you are outside our service area (Tasmania, WA, NT, far-north QLD), pickup is still an option - you can collect from any of our network locations and arrange transport from there.
We do generally recommend delivery rather than pickup. SteelChief panels arrive pre-assembled - they do not come in a box or with packaging, so the panels themselves are what you are transporting.
What to bring for pickup:
- At least 2 people
- Blankets to protect the panel surfaces
- Straps or ropes to secure the load
- A trailer or van large enough for the largest panel
- Smaller products may fit in a ute or smaller trailer
Things to know before booking pickup:
- Screws to assemble the shed are included.
- Anchor hardware depends on your installation surface. Concrete fixing brackets (CFKs) for slab installs are part of the standard product via BaseSmart. For non-slab DIY installs (star pickets, timber sub-floor, etc.) the anchor pack needs to be specified separately - tell the sales team your installation surface during quoting.
- Pickup locations may not have staff available to help load - bring your own help.
- Ask the sales team about the size of the largest panel before booking transport, so you can plan vehicle size.
For how to handle and store the panels once you have them, see "How do I handle and store the panels before installation?" below.
Do you deliver to my address?
Within our service area (eastern Australia, generally within 1.5 to 2 hours' drive of one of our offices or display partners), yes. The main delivery, installation and concreting hubs are Melbourne, Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney and surrounds. See the service area question for a full state-by-state list of regions we cover.
Our delivery trucks run regular routes through these areas. Your delivery is usually paired with the next scheduled trip rather than booked as a one-off, which keeps costs reasonable. Ask the sales team when the next truck is running your way.
For addresses outside our direct service area - Tasmania, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and far north of Gympie in QLD - we don't deliver directly. Two options:
- Distributor coordination - we can sometimes help arrange delivery through one of our distributors in your region. Ask the sales team if there is one nearby.
- Pickup with own transport - the shed can be picked up from one of our network locations and transported with a freight company of your choosing.
The simplest way to confirm delivery for your specific address is to share your postcode with the sales team - they will tell you what is available and quote any delivery cost.
How much is delivery?
Delivery is quoted per address based on distance from our nearest office. There is no single price list - costs vary depending on where you are and how the shed gets to you. Share your postcode with the sales team and they will quote a number with your shed quote.
We try to pair deliveries with installer trips where possible. If you are using us to install, get a delivery + install quote rather than delivery-only - the bundled price is usually better than the two separately.
How long until my shed arrives (timings and lead times)?
SteelChief sheds are manufactured to order, not held in stock - every shed is built to the customer's specifications.
Standard turnaround is approximately 2 to 3 weeks from payment to delivery for most sheds in our standard service area. This is the combined manufacture and delivery time. Payment in full is required before we commence manufacture - the clock starts once payment is received.
Things that can shift the timeframe:
- Where you are. Trucks run regular routes; if a truck is heading your way soon, delivery can be quicker. Remote or one-off addresses may take longer.
- What you've ordered. Custom-sized, large or unusually specified sheds take more time in the factory.
- Whether a permit is required. Permit lead time is on top of the manufacturing time - typically 2 to 4 weeks in VIC and similar in QLD, BEFORE manufacturing starts. Where a permit is needed, we'd recommend getting the permit approved before ordering the shed itself.
- Slab pour, if SteelChief is doing it. Add roughly 1 to 2 weeks for the slab to be poured and cured before install.
- Weather. High winds and heavy rain can delay deliveries, slab pours and installations. We work around the weather rather than risk damaged panels or a compromised slab.
If you have an urgent delivery requirement (event, deadline, hand-over), let the sales team know upfront - we can sometimes prioritise jobs where the timing is critical.
The sales team can give an indicative date with your quote once they know your location, configuration and whether a permit applies.
How do I handle and store the panels before installation?
SteelChief panels are manufactured as pre-assembled walls and roof sections. They are designed to be handled with care, both during transport and in the period between delivery and install.
During handling:
- Always move panels in a vertical position. Lower or raise each panel carefully flat onto the ground when setting it down.
- Do not carry panels horizontally - the panel can flex and may bend or be permanently damaged.
- Be especially careful in windy conditions. Panels catch wind like a sail and can be very hard to control - injuries and damage happen most often in wind.
- Two people minimum, especially for larger walls.
During storage (if the shed will not be installed immediately after delivery or pickup):
- Lay panels flat on the ground.
- Use heavy weights and timbers on top to hold them down flat.
- Keep them away from wind exposure - wind can lift unanchored panels and damage them.
- Alternatively, tie them securely to a sturdy fence.
- The best option is to store them in a garage or sheltered space, out of the wind, until install day.
For pickup customers, panel size also determines transport requirements. Ask the sales team about the size of the largest panel before booking transport.
