If you’re weighing up SteelChief against Absco, you’re looking at two Australian steel shed manufacturers that have taken very different approaches to the same problem.

SteelChief builds custom, made-to-order sheds with hand-assembled panels, rated to N3 wind class across the entire range. Every shed is built to your exact dimensions in our Ballarat factory and delivered as pre-squared, pre-built sections ready to install. Absco manufactures fixed-size flat-pack kits using their patented SNAPTiTE assembly system, rated to N2 wind class as standard. You buy them through Bunnings, a network of retailers, or direct, and assemble them yourself on site.

Both are Australian-made. Both have long warranties. But the way they’re engineered, how they go together, and what kind of conditions they’re built to handle are genuinely different.
The panel design itself also varies, with SteelChief utilising a wider, deeper-ribbed profile to increase structural stiffness.

A Full Wind Class Difference

Australian sheds are rated against AS 1170.2, which sets out wind classes based on the kind of conditions a structure is designed to handle. The two classes that matter for most domestic sheds are N2 and N3.

N2 covers typical suburban backyards – sheltered blocks, lower wind exposure, the kind of cul-de-sac where the air barely moves on a still day. N3 steps up to more exposed suburban sites, semi-rural land, elevated blocks, and many coastal locations. The difference isn’t just a number – it’s a full wind class of engineered capacity.

SteelChief sheds are rated to N3 across the entire range. Every shed we build is engineered for those higher loads as standard, whether it’s a small garden shed or an art shed.

Absco sheds are rated to N2 as standard. For some models, Absco offers an optional Cyclone Kit as an add-on that upgrades the structure to C1, designed for cyclonic regions. The kit is sold separately, at additional cost, and isn’t available across the full range.

Here’s the question worth sitting with: if extreme weather is enough of a concern that a manufacturer designed and sells a Cyclone Kit upgrade, what does the standard product do when conditions push past its design parameters? It’s a fair question to ask before you commit, especially if your block isn’t perfectly sheltered.

Live in a tucked-away suburban cul-de-sac? N2 might be all you ever need. Live on an elevated block, a coastal property, an open rural site, or anywhere that catches a decent winter southerly? The difference between N2 and N3 stops being academic pretty quickly.

Assembly: Pre-Built Panels vs SNAPTiTE

Absco’s SNAPTiTE assembly is a patented system that reduces the number of screws by around 75% and, in concept, speeds up the build considerably. Sections snap together and lock, and Absco’s marketing puts the time savings at up to 80% faster than conventional flat-pack. When assembled as intended, the system is designed to accelerate the process. The gap is between that concept and what assembly often looks like in practice.

Absco’s own FAQ acknowledges that the pre-drilled holes may not always line up – and recommends inserting the screw at an angle and tightening to twist the sheets back into alignment. That’s their own guidance, on their own website. ProductReview feedback echoes the same pattern: misaligned holes, missing components, instructions that are tricky to follow on the first build.

Absco’s own estimate for a 3m x 3m garden shed is around 1–2 days with two to four people on the job. That’s a meaningful chunk of a long weekend even when nothing goes wrong.

SteelChief takes a different approach. Each wall and roof section is hand-built to your exact specs in our Ballarat factory and delivered as pre-assembled, pre-squared panels. Instead of joining hundreds of individual sheets and brackets, you’re connecting a handful of large sections that are already correctly aligned. The result is a faster build, straighter walls, and a lot less of the back-and-forth that comes with forcing flat-pack components into place.

Happy to do the build yourself?

Our panels are designed to go up quickly and cleanly – and because the precision is locked in at the factory, there’s no twisting sheets to make holes line up.

Rather not pick up a drill at all?

We can handle the whole project: design, council permits, concrete slab, delivery, and professional installation. Absco doesn’t offer an installation service, so if you buy one and can’t put it together, you’ll need to find and coordinate your own installer.

What Happens When the Weather Turns?

Absco’s own FAQ is upfront about this: their sheds are “designed to be weatherproof for normal conditions” but “in the event of extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain and high wind gusts, some water may enter through the sheeting joins of the shed.” That’s a direct quote from their website.
Credit to Absco for being honest about it. For a sheltered suburban backyard storing garden tools, it may genuinely never be a problem. But if you’re on a coastal block, an exposed site, or anywhere that cops the occasional heavy storm – and you’re storing anything you’d rather not see ruined – it’s a significant consideration.

SteelChief takes a different approach at two levels. Because the structure is engineered to N3 across the range, the whole shed is built to handle higher wind and weather loads as standard. And because our panels are pre-assembled in the factory, the joins are engineered for tighter, more consistent sealing than panels assembled piece-by-piece on site.

Our BaseSmart base system adds another layer of protection where sheds are most vulnerable – the bottom edge. It seals the base against water and debris, which is the most common starting point for rust. Absco requires a rebated concrete slab for warranty purposes (to channel water away from the structure) but doesn’t include a dedicated base protection product.

If Your Space Doesn’t Fit a Standard Size

Absco offers a wide range of standard sizes across their garden shed, garage, and carport ranges. For the most common backyard shapes, there’s probably something in the catalogue that fits. Their own FAQ is direct about the limit, though: “custom sizing is not available as our sheds are pre-engineered kits.” Pick the closest size up or down, and you go with that.

With SteelChief, every shed is built to your exact measurements. Need 2.7m wide because that’s what fits between the boundary fence and the rainwater tank? Done. Want 4.2m deep so you can fit a workbench and still close the door? No problem. We build to those dimensions, not the nearest standard size up or down.

We also build shapes that pre-engineered kit manufacturers simply can’t accommodate. Corner sheds for L-shaped spaces against a back fence. Trapezoid sheds for angled boundary lines. Triangular sheds for awkward corners. Slim sheds as narrow as 600mm for tight side-passage access. If your block has a tricky spot, chances are we’ve built something similar before.

Our online design tool lets you experiment with different dimensions, door placements, and layouts while showing a real-time price estimate. It’s the easiest way to see what’s possible before you commit.

Let’s Be Honest About Price

Absco is generally the more affordable option upfront – particularly if you catch a Bunnings sale. With wide retail distribution and a flat-pack model built around volume, an Absco shed will typically cost less at the checkout than a comparable SteelChief structure. For basic backyard storage in a sheltered spot, that’s a genuine advantage.

The things that drive ongoing cost are rust, water damage, storm-related repairs, panel replacements, and eventually the replacement of the shed itself. A shed rated to N2, with manufacturer-acknowledged water ingress through sheeting joins in extreme weather, and no dedicated base protection, will age differently from one built to N3, with factory-engineered joins, and BaseSmart base sealing as standard.

Site-assembled tolerances matter here too. Even with a clever system like SNAPTiTE, every screw and join that has to be worked into alignment on the day is a potential gap. Factory-built panels deliver a tighter, more consistent shell – and those tighter joins are exactly where the difference shows up over years of weather.

If you need a shed that’ll last 15–20 years without major maintenance, protect valuable tools or equipment, or handle coastal and high-wind conditions, the upfront premium for an engineered structure typically pays for itself well inside the 10-year mark.

Product Range

Absco’s range covers most of the core outdoor structure categories – garden sheds, garages, carports, aviaries, and patio covers. If you need a shed and a carport in matching colours, they’ve got you covered.

SteelChief’s range goes broader. As well as sheds, we manufacture studios and retreats, bird aviaries, chicken coops, dog kennels and runs, cat enclosures, bin lockers, and boat storage. Everything’s built from the same materials in the same Ballarat factory, so you can colour-match across your whole backyard. If you need a shed, a chook pen, and a bike locker, you can get all three in the same colour from a single manufacturer.

So Which One’s Right for You?

Absco might be the better fit if:

  • You need a standard-size shed for basic storage on a sheltered block
  • Budget is your main concern and you want the lowest upfront price
  • Convenience matters – you’d rather walk into Bunnings and walk out with it
  • You’re a confident DIYer comfortable with a one-to-two-day flat-pack build
  • You want the reassurance of a lifetime warranty on the standard range
  • Your site is well sheltered and N2 wind class is suitable for your conditions

SteelChief is probably the better choice if:

  • You need a custom size to fit a tricky or tight space
  • You’re thinking long-term and don’t want to replace it in 5–10 years
  • Your property is exposed to coastal winds, open terrain, or harsher weather
  • You’d prefer one team to handle everything: design, permits, concrete, and install
  • Your shed needs to protect valuable tools, equipment, or vehicles
  • You want multiple outdoor structures that match (shed, aviary, kennel, etc.)
  • You prioritise structural rigidity, provided by SteelChief’s deeper-ribbed, wider panel profile.

Common Questions

Is Absco better than SteelChief for windy areas?

No. SteelChief sheds are rated to N3 wind class across the entire range. Absco sheds are rated to N2 as standard, with an optional Cyclone Kit available on some models to upgrade to C1 at additional cost. For exposed suburban blocks, semi-rural sites, or coastal properties, N3 is the safer baseline.

In practical terms, N3 covers a broader range of Australian conditions out of the box. If you’re choosing Absco for an exposed site, you’d typically need to add the Cyclone Kit (where available) to reach a comparable structural rating – and the kit isn’t offered across the full Absco range.

What’s the SNAPTiTE system and is it faster than SteelChief’s panels?

SNAPTiTE is Absco’s patented flat-pack assembly system that snaps components together with around 75% fewer screws than conventional kits. Absco estimates 1–2 days for a 3x3m shed with two to four people. SteelChief panels are pre-assembled in the factory and delivered as large pre-squared sections, so the on-site build is faster again.

SNAPTiTE is a genuinely clever system when components align as intended. Absco’s own FAQ acknowledges pre-drilled holes may not always line up, and recommends inserting screws at an angle to force alignment. SteelChief’s pre-built panels remove that variable – the precision is locked in at the factory before the panels leave Ballarat.

Does Absco offer installation?

No. Absco sheds are sold as DIY flat-pack kits only – there’s no manufacturer-backed installation service. If you buy an Absco shed and don’t want to build it yourself, you’ll need to find and coordinate your own installer. SteelChief offers a full end-to-end service: design, council permits, concreting, delivery, and professional installation.

Are Absco sheds waterproof?

Absco’s own FAQ states their sheds are “designed to be weatherproof for normal conditions” but notes that “in the event of extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain and high wind gusts, some water may enter through the sheeting joins of the shed.” SteelChief panels are factory-engineered for tighter joins, and our BaseSmart system seals the base against water and debris.

For sheltered suburban sites in moderate climates, Absco’s standard sealing is often fine. For coastal or weather-prone blocks – and for anything you’d rather not see damaged by water – the difference matters.

Can I get a custom-sized Absco shed?

No. Absco’s own FAQ confirms that “custom sizing is not available as our sheds are pre-engineered kits.” You choose from their fixed standard sizes. SteelChief builds every shed to your exact measurements, and also makes non-standard shapes including corner, trapezoid, triangular, and slim sheds down to 600mm wide for tight spaces.
